ABOUT WEIGHTED BLANKETS

Yes! Weighted blankets offer a soothing, calming, deep pressure therapy that provides a variety of benefits, such as helping customers relax and concentrate during the day, as well as sleep better at night.

Weighted blankets use DPTS to raise serotonin levels in the brain, helping to promote a sense of well-being, calm & relaxation. As our society grows increasingly inundated with environmental stimuli, many are finding it harder to unwind and relax. The number of Americans suffering from stress, anxiety & insomnia is staggering - over 40,000,000 and unfortunately that number isn't slowing. A weighted blanket provides non-toxic, effective relief for those seeking a natural solution to every day stress and anxiety.

The benefits of a weighted blanket can be traced back to the Mother's womb. Before entering the world, an infant is held tight inside the womb where they are shielded from sensory perceptions.

As children grow, most learn to adapt to new environmental stimuli, such as light, sounds and movements. Some babies do not adapt well to their new environment and suffer from sensory processing disorders.

Sensory Processing Disorder is a term used to describe the inability to efficiently and correctly process sensory information coming to the brain from the environment. Touch, taste, smell, sight and sound are most frequently referred to as the senses, however the body also senses movement, force of gravity and body position through the muscles and joints.

Children, teens and adults with Autism do not regulate sensory input well, which is referred to as Proprioception. Children with Sensory Processing Disorder often benefit from a weighted blanket to help their body organize and process sensory input so that they are less restless and fidgety and allow most individuals to sleep better during the night.

Adults and children frequently use weighted blankets to relax at home or in the office or supplement various therapies and treatments.

Weighted blankets are also popular in the education and healthcare industries among occupational therapists, pediatric therapists, schools, hospitals, sleep disorder clinics, sleep research facilities, dentists, chiropractors, psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, sports rehabilitation centers, hospice cancer centers, long-term care facilities, retirement homes, special education centers, crime victim centers, accident victim recovery centers and soldier family care clinics. Corporate customers receive volume purchase discounts, which are available by calling (512) 514-5529 or contact us here.

Anyone can enjoy the benefits of a weighted blanket, but they’re well known to help children and adults with anxiety, sensory processing disorder, insomnia, ADD/ADHD, Autism, and other similar conditions. Many therapists have used weighted blankets in their therapy for years before it became popular mainstream. If you struggle with any kind of condition that could benefit from deep pressure touch stimulation, your doctor or therapist may very well recommend a weighted blanket. Despite its use in therapy for various conditions, it is not a medical device, but rather a tool or comfort to use as you see fit.

We recommend that adult blankets should be 10% of their body weight, while kids can get a blanket that is 10% of their body weight, plus 1-2lbs to account for growth. Check out our size guide for more information!

Weighted blankets can be cooler or warmer depending on the type of fabric you choose.

For example, Coolmax is a patented fabric designed to stay cool, wicking away moisture to keep you from getting too hot, and our 100% cotton blankets are very breathable. Any weighted blanket made from these fabrics is recommended for hot sleepers.

Minky fabric, on the other hand, is 100% polyester, which does tend to run warm while sleeping, and is perfect for cold winter nights or for those who tend to get cold easily.

We use 100% non-toxic plastic pellets as opposed to glass beads because we want to provide the safest blanket possible for you, your children, and your pets. Though glass beads do move less and may seem appealing — many glass beads have been found to have lead in them, and sometimes treated with arsenic, which is toxic to both humans and pets.

The blankets are also filled with a synthetic fiber called Polyfill that keeps our blankets cooler and creates a soft-pillowy texture for that perfect snuggle time.

You can read more about how our blankets are crafted here.

Compared to a good night's rest, our weighted blankets are very cost effective. Many customers will tell you that after going to bed with one of our blankets that they enjoyed their first night of deep sleep in years.

Mosaic Weighted Blankets® are manufactured with highest quality fabrics and weights. Blankets range in cost based on size, material, weight and fabric selected. Click here to shop our collection of weighted blankets.

Mosaic Weighted Blankets are made by sewing individual, square “pockets” filled with microplastic pellets, which keeps the beads in place and distributes the weight evenly.

While you don’t need a cover for your weighted blanket, some people prefer to use them for easy cleaning and washing. Our weighted blankets are 100% machine washable as is, and you can choose what kind of fabric you’d like, making a cover unnecessary.

Coverage will vary from policy to policy, and you will need to contact your insurance company to be certain.

To ask about coverage, you will want to obtain a durable medical equipment code (DME) and talk with a DME in your area for potential coverage. In certain cases, Medicare or Medicaid can cover claims, but again you would have to research that option with your insurance coverage. Many people purchase a weighted blanket and turn it in for insurance reimbursement after the purchase, as the product information on the receipt is usually enough to process a claim.

You can wash your weighted blankets, lap pads, and shoulder wraps in cold water and air dry when possible. You can also pop in dryer on low heat for a short time with a towel to fluff if needed. Blankets weighing over 12 lbs should be laundered in a commercial washer and dryer. For more details, read our Blanket Care page.

These are all weighted blankets, operating in the same manner, using weight in the blanket to help relieve symptoms of stress, anxiety and more.
